Quri Vodka Origin Story Part I: Love, Vodka, and Peru
I always get asked, “How did you end up in Peru?
It’s an interesting story, and most people are shocked that the Quri Vodka concept actually never started in Peru.
Let me explain.
It all started in Chicago…
It was 2014 and I was working as an engineer right outside of Chicago.
That year, Rio de Janeiro was hosting the World Cup, and the Brazilian team was predicted to take the win.
One day I came up with the brilliant idea: If the soccer capital of the world was going to win the World Cup, it would be the party of the millennium, and there was no way I was going to miss it.
So I called up to get my tourist visa to Brazil, but Brazil has a strict reciprocal policy.
You have to go to the Brazilian embassy with photos, paperwork, give them your passport, and wait for it to process for a week so they can laminate your visa in.
The kicker is that my resident address was in Maryland, and I couldn’t go to the Brazilian consulate in Chicago. I had to file at the embassy in Washington, DC. My poor mother went to the embassy a few times, with long waits just to get me a visa so I can go to a party. God bless her.
However, it’s one of the things I’m most grateful she’s ever done for me, as the decision to go to Brazil was one of the best I’ve ever made in my life.
Brazil Loses The World Cup, But I Have The Biggest Win of My Life
Though Brazil lost, the World Cup experience was epic. During that time I met a group of Americans and Colombians that invited me to travel through Brazil with them.
I said of course, and hopped on a bus to Búzios.
I arrived at my hostel and there she was.
The most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life, Shirley.
I Fell In Love With a Peruvian Woman, Shirley
Shirley and I fell instantly in love, and married a few years later.
Shirley was from Peru, and while we were dating I would fly to Peru to visit her.
During that time I realized that my office job wasn’t fulfilling for me, so I left and moved to Peru to be with my wife.
I Also Fell in Love With Peru, and Never Left
Peru is nothing short of incredible.
You have an epic coast line, the Amazon jungle, the Andes mountains, a vibrant culture, and the kindest people.
Since moving, I have gained a second home, and I’ve never been more content.
A few years later Quri was born…
But how did I get the idea for Quri Vodka, and why did I choose Quinoa?
I’ll share that in our next episode coming soon!
